When the Cookshire Fair returns from August 20 to 23, visitors can see firsthand how 4-H is helping young people develop valuable skills while building a strong connection to agriculture and their community.
The Sawyerville 4-H Club is proud to be part of this long-standing local tradition. 4-H encourages youth to learn through hands-on experiences, guided by its motto, “Learn to Do by Doing.” Through livestock projects, leadership activities, competitions, and community events, members gain confidence, responsibility, teamwork skills, and friendships that often last a lifetime.
The Cookshire Fair is one of the highlights of the 4-H year. It gives members the chance to showcase the dedication and hard work they put into their projects while sharing their passion for agriculture with fairgoers.
4-H events at the Fair
Activities begin Thursday evening with the annual 4-H Judging Competition and Farmer Olympics. Participants evaluate classes of livestock and agricultural products before presenting and defending their decisions to a judge. This helps develop observation, critical thinking, and public-speaking skills.
The evening continues with the popular Farmers Olympics, where members take part in agriculture-themed games and team challenges. The event promotes teamwork, lots of laughter, and often gets very dirty, which is so much fun!
On Friday, Show Day takes centre stage as members proudly exhibit the animals they trained throughout the year. Visitors can watch conformation and showmanship classes featuring dairy cattle, beef cattle, sheep, rabbits, and more.
One of the highlights of the Fair is the Pre-4-H Showmanship Class, where some of our youngest participants can step into the show ring and experience what it’s like to exhibit an animal. This fun, non-competitive event helps children build confidence while introducing them to the exciting world of agriculture and livestock.
Throughout the Fair, visitors are encouraged to stop by the 4-H Barn to learn more about farming, livestock, and the role agriculture plays in everyday life.
